Wake Up to Kona

I've joined another blog hop and today is my day.  When Madame Samm announced the theme of Kona Solids I knew I had to sign up.  I've had a pattern and the fabrics for a quilt for over a year and this hop was the PUSH I needed to get it done!   :)

This is the bundle of Kona's I had purchased.  My favorite color palette to work with.  Love. LOVE.

And this is the quilt top I made:
The pattern is called "Circular Reasoning" by Carolina Patchworks.  I bought it here.
It is fused and raw edge appliqued.  I used a blanket stitch.  It went pretty fast.

The pattern makes a 75 inch square quilt but I wanted it smaller to give as a baby quilt.  I reduced the pattern to 75% of its original and made it a 54 inch square.

As you can see its not quilted yet.  I can NOT figure out how to quilt it!!!  I love how its quilted on the pattern with pebble quilting around all the letters and a secondary circle formed in the negative space.  My free motion quilting skills are sorely lacking so first time pebble quilting is not gonna happen on this one.  And I don't want to do any quilting over the letters.
Any suggestions?

This ended up being my favorite pic of all I took.  :)

Thanks to all involved in such a wonderful hop - Madame Samm, Carol and all us hoppers!

Ooh, your quilt is so fine. I really like that picture, too. My word for the year is TRY. Give pebbles a try. Fight your fear, practice, and give it a go. I think you will make it beautiful.

Love the blues you chose for your sweet baby quilt, Cindy. My fave, too! You did a wonderful job of the raw edge applique. Hmmm.... quilting with the walking foot for this one, without quilting over the letters is a tough one! I will send you an email with some suggestions!

That's a beautiful top and will be stunning when quilted! One of my favourite bundles too! As for the quilting, I agree the letters should remain up quilted, or at least in the ditch or on the edge to make them stand out, how about swirls all over, thinly ones around the letters and to create the big circle around and then increase their size to big ones on the outer edges of the top. Beautiful however you quilt it!

Hi Cindy! That is a very impressive and yummy quilt. I like how the darker colors draw your "eye" in. Good luck on your quilting ideas! Keep up the good work!

Lovely quilt! I love the colors you choose for the alphabets!

Wonderful quilt, great colors. How about meandering loops in the negative space and then just quilt around all the letters?

Very pretty quilt. Love the applique...yet another lesson for me to learn. Thanks for the inspiration!

I am with Trudi - swirls (even a meander) very small around letters and increasing their size as you expand out - would really accent and add to the quilt design. Love it!!

Thats really cute. What about doing stippling around the letters? You aren't going to get good at fmqing, until you start doing it more ;) So just have fun and practice away!

This is a great top! Very creative. Can't wait to see how you quilt it!

The Kona colors you chose are so beautiful and that quilt design is a great way to use it...love it! Thanks for hopping with us!

What a great design! I would quilt around each letter for sure. I would get a piece of clear vinyl, lay it over the top, and try different designs with a dry erase marker.

I am not a great quilter, but you need to try the pebbling, it is pretty forgiving. Your cute turned out very cute.

What a great baby quilt!

I am very inexperienced with free motion, but I will say that pebbling is my favorite all over "filler". I think I would do a very, very close outline on the letters, probably by hand and then pebble the outer are of the central circle by machine. If there is still too much space between the letters because pebbles were so detailed, I would go back and echo around the letters to fill in the between pouffiness.Yeah, that's a word, isn't it?

Fabulous - I love it!

Beautiful color palette and interesting pattern. You already have a good suggestion about the quilting. I was thinking circular, too. Thanks for sharing your lovely work ... :) Pat

As a former reading teacher, I love the letters on your quilt!

sew.darn.quilt said...

Fantastic quilts. How about a spiral, working from the letters out to the edge? It would be in keeping with the circular "motion" in this quilt top. Or cross hatch, if you wanted contrast and easier quilting. Whatever you choose will be gorgeous.

Now that is just plain "cool". I love it! Great photo with the tree branch shadows in the background too!

Lou said...

Awesome!
I would pebble quilt in the letter area and then do swirls in the open area!

Lori said...

this is really wonderful, this will be fantastic when finished. Thanks for sharing.

I think the quilt is cute. How about outlining the letters, doing a circle around the all the letters and then in the blank space doing something you are comfortable with, even if it is straight lines. You could even make it look like a big sun with the lines going out like sunrays.

Wonderful! What a fun design, Cindy and I LOVE the colour bundle you chose. This will be an amazing baby quilt. Hmmm... as for the quilting. I think I would outline the letters and divide the background into quarters (then you could quilt concentric lines, if you wanted). Just and idea. I really don't think you can go wrong. Go for it! Thanks so much for sharing and being a part of the hop.

Very cute quilt. i can see how the quilting will be a challenge. if you try the pebbles, i bet you will be quite skilled by the time you are done! i need to try some new skills too.

This is a wonderful unique quilt for a baby. I adore the letterings and the colors of blue. Thank you sew much for hopping...

I think it could be very effective if you went around each letter. You'd still get the circle effect, and could even make a circle around the outside edge. That's walking foot stuff and pretty nice when finished. In the meantime, practice the pebbles on a small piece and maybe pebble the outside blank surface area. Or make quilted letters out there in the edges - sort of as if they are falling out of the circle, maybe not even complete letters because they are bumping into each other. If you don't feel ready for pebbles, don't do them yet.

Marcy said...

This is beyond clever. Great colors.

Rachaeldaisy said...

What a fun quilt. I love the way the letters are arranged in a circle. I thought as so as I saw it that it would look amazing with letters quilted in the white part. or even concentric circles coming out from the circle of letters.

I LOVE this! Could you try just stippling it? You could do a super tight stipple and leave all the letters unquilted.

I am intrigued by your blog so am going to follow! Your quilt is great! Very unique. Here's a thought on the quilting - you could strait stitch circle 3-4 times around the outside of the letters. Maybe 1/4 inch away from each other. Then cross hatch the other areas with one inch between lines. This would enable you to have good control because it can all be done with a walking foot. I like to mark my lines with a frixion pen because you just iron away the marks. Have fun and be sure to post a photo when it is done!

Been wondering if the letters say something special. I love the simplicity of your quilt and think any quilting you do will certainly be showcased. What about doing a circle around the letters, tiny stippling around the letters, and then just straight lines or a gridwork in the negative space?

Love it! My favorite palette, too. :)

Love this quilt! I would stitch around the letters, then, start with a circle outside the letters and keep spiralling out to the edges. Someone earlier in this hop did spiral quilting on her project, and I really loved it.

lovely kona colors ... perfect for your baby quilt. how about edge stitching the letters and then just go 'round with circles two or three inches apart starting an inch or so out from the letters, or echo quilt the letters so the circles are squiggly.

JessicaK said...

Very cool with the letters in the pattern.

Peggy S said...

Great baby quilt! How about meandering with some letters or even numbers tossed in. Have fun with it.

apple blossom said...

I can see making random 10/12 in circles in the white area then filling each circle with other circles 8/6/4 in. etc. for the quilting part.

Textile Recycler said...

For the quilting, how about echo quilting around the letters and some straight line quilting at odd angles/diagonals for the part outside the text circle. I love your color palette!
