ABC Wednesday

I thought of a few hobbies that start with “G”: gardening, golf, graphology and genealogy. Since we’ve only done one, it was a no-brainer on which I’d choose.

G is for Gardening

Our early gardening experience was a small bed in the back of the house we rented when we first moved to WA. Our landlords were wonderful people who even let us have chickens on the property! We grew the basics and our kids had their first tastes of home grown vegetables…nothing like it. When we bought our first home (on acreage) we could expand our gardening vision. So the little bed became a plowed up spot. We tried many more types of vegetables….success with some (green beans and peas grow well in the Northwest) and not so much with others (our asparagus bed never did take off). For me, my favorite gardening method was the “square foot” way. A plowed up field was too big to take care of. I’m so visual that all I saw was this HUGE job of weeding. I couldn’t break it down into small portions in my head. Square foot gardening allowed me to concentrate on one little bed…which never seemed like too much work.

Hubby and I haven’t done much gardening since the kids left home. We talk about it every spring. One little four foot bed. Just one. Maybe this year?

Lots of folks participate in ABC Wednesday, be sure to check out more blogs!

My dad has always Grown his own veg, and how I wish I had the enthusiasm. Oh, the thought is there and how I would love home grown veg to go with my 'home grown' eggs, but I just don't seem to find the time or the energy!!

The nicest way to garden is to have something that is not stressful. Gardening should be relaxing. Looks like you found the solution.

Ah yes, gardening. I can only dream of it with the mountains of snow in my yard. This made me remember spring. Thanks.

I'm with you on the square foot gardening. We once had a half acre veggie garden, and for years after putting up all that produce, I resisted planting a single vegetable.

I like gardens but think that when it comes to actually gardening, I'm better suited in supervisory role!

I think I'd like the square foot method too! I'm easily daunted.

On behalf of the team, thanks for taking part in ABC Wednesday this week! :)

Every year I plan to start a vegetable garden. Every year I find an excuse not to.
I have never grown vegetables, no idea how to. However...this year! Or maybe not.
Liked your post ;-)

I like your garden. You can fit a lot into a little space. I have four 3X10 foot beds on a cedar log float. Come over and take a look under gardening. This week I went with geese. The first pair just returned. I invite you to come see. - Margy

I have always thought of
gardens as magic shows for
the inner child. To see
things sprouting out of the
ground, blossoming flowers
exploding with colors and
the wunderment of how it
all happens from just a
tiny little seed? I can't
explain it. But it allows
me to enjoy sharing this Earth
with all life. Very childlike.
